The Thing by thisismyboomstick The Thing by thisismyboomstick
"The Thing" is one of my favorite movies. I love the tension, the characters and the actors. Fantastic.
Doesn't really look like Kurt, wasn't really going for it. I think it looks like the character, just not the actor.

This is awesome....love it. I agree, doesn't look like Russell but I like it better actually....kinda like Lucas wanting to redo Star Wars with total CGI characters once CGI catches up.

Cool. this is one of my favorite horror movies (even though I had some horrible nightmares afterwards). It was worth it!
Words of wisdom: "thats no dog!"
(from "The Thing" 1982).

Sweet artwork for one of my fave movies. Possibly THE fave. I found it through the DA-Talent group and it was well worth looking into. I've got a few Things laying around my gallery if you find a moment...

And there's the huskie lol. It's pretty funny the first time I saw this movie I thought the norweigians were nuts especially how they went in a helicopter to try and snipe that dog. But after another 20 minutes later I realized why they were trying to shoot that dog because it the thing. It worked like a Trojan horse to get in the base and then transformed into a grotesque monster. Also the thing should have an original form in my opinion because it crashed like 100000 years ago and when it probabley came out of it's ship and eventually froze it wouldn't be able to absorb anything. In fact that could be another weakness of it if it's cells were destroyed it wouldn't be able to assimlate

John Carpenter's "The Thing" is one of my all time favourite films as well. I remember how freaked out I was when that guys chest crack open and the head slowly came ripping of the table, and the head crawling away...

I was looking at my dog very carefully for weeks afterward. :lmao:

This movie worked on so many levels, in my opinion, it was logical in terms of the physiological nature of this alien lifeform, the practicality of the isolation dynamic of the characters and the acting was superb (imo). I own the directors cut and I look at it at least a couple times a year.

I also think that Carpenters Directing is reminiscent of Scott's in that he doesn't allow his actors to over-act, which is quite common in most sci-fi and superhero films. I think of films like Bladerunner and Alien, how most of the folks in these films were just very naturalistic in their behavior and very plausible in the way they approached the circumstances presented to them...

Now everything seems so formulaic, I can imagine these modern Directors saying to themselves,"Insert Big Explosion here, cue catchy one line there..."

While The Thing certainly did have these (Yeah, Fuck you too.-- Kurt Russell to the alien) it all seemed much more sincere and these pandering... maybe I'm just biased because I'm older ...

Can you imagine Carpenter (or Scott) doing a superhero flick? I think it would be totally sobering and terrifying. I mean, if people ever saw another person manifest some supernatural power-- they'd be terrified and screaming and going into shock, right? Anyway, that's how I'd do it.
:work:

Anyway, sorry for rambling-- I just love your influences and I'm sure I'd be browsing through your DVDs and seeing pretty much everything I already own or need to see.

I agree. fantastic movie unspoiled by shitty studio execs, who nowadays would have them all be teenagers on a ski trip.

Very nice work here! I love that movie. The details are just fantastic here- a lot of the ink work reminds me of Paul Pope's work, especially the area near the dog and the cast at the bottom =D

Dude, love it. Not only have you captured the essence of the movie in a single image, you've also brought the sheer overwhelming sensation of isolation.

What do you think about the Thing prequel they're making?

I dunno about the prequel. It's kind of pointless. It's all about the Norwegian team who first find the ship. My main problem is that there will be no drama, you know they all die. You know how at least 3 of them die, specifically. You also know how it ends (the helicopter chase after the 'dog'). So, I'm not looking forward to it.

Good point. It'd be like watching a movie about JFK and his last, fateful ride. Bad analogy, I know.
